UI Health advanced practice providers issue strike notice

SEIU Local 73, which represents about 200 advanced practice providers at Chicago-based UI Health, has issued a 10-day notice of intent to strike. A strike could begin on or after Nov. 11, according to a UI Health statement shared with Becker’s. UI Health noted that filing the notice does not mean a strike will occur.

Members voted to authorize a strike in October, the union said in a news release. The union is seeking a 2% wage increase that other campus workers received in August, along with changes related to pay transparency and equity, staffing, meal breaks and sick time.

“Our invitation to mediate stands,” Local 73 President Dian Palmer said in the release. “We would much rather settle this at the table than on a picket line, and we are ready to meet whenever the university is.”

UI Health said the Illinois Appellate Court has temporarily paused collective bargaining obligations between the university and the union, and that it considers a strike unlawful while the order remains in effect. UI Health said it has contingency plans in place to maintain operations at the University of Illinois Hospital & Clinics if a strike occurs.
