For the report, researchers examined LinkedIn data from 2012 to 2017, along with survey data.
Other industries where the freelance sector is thriving include retail and consumer products, staffing, oil and energy, and professional services. These industries have seen freelance five-year growth of 42 percent, 41 percent, 39 percent and 34 percent, respectively.
Overall, the report found freelancers across industries are growing quickly in North Dakota, Louisiana, Mississippi, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia.
