The Service Employees International Union recently developed an agreement with the hospital to allow a “free and fair election process” so roughly 500 Cooley Dickinson workers can decide whether they want to join SEIU, Tyrék Lee Sr., executive vice president of the SEIU’s Local 1199, said in a statement.
Hospital officials told The Boston Globe they respect employees’ right to hold a union election. “However, we do not believe that having a union is in the best interests of the employees, patients or the community and do not believe that employees need a union to represent them with respect to their terms and conditions of employment,” the hospital said.
The union noted a similar election process took place earlier this year at Partners’ Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital in Boston. In March, workers there voted to join SEIU.
