St. John’s has roughly 1,000 RNs on staff, 100 of whom are PRN nurses. PRN stands for pro re nata, a Latin phase that denotes “as needed.”

A hospital spokesman said the move is a “fairness thing and a consistency thing.” One nurse told the State Journal-Register that PRN nurses are “very disappointed and hurt” and feel as if the hospital is “cutting us off at the knees.”
