Employees at Jackson Health have not had a raise in about three years due to financial struggles. In lieu of raises, the system’s president and CEO, Carlos Migoya, had promised to give employees a cut of any budget surplus, according to Edwin O’Dell, a Jackson Health spokesman. The system exceeded its budget in 2013 and has earmarked around $10.9 million of the surplus for the employee payments, resulting in about a 2 percent payment for employees.
Eligible employees include full- and part-time workers who have worked enough hours in the system and were hired prior to October 2012. Those hired on or after October 2012 will receive a prorated gain-sharing payment, according to Mr. O’Dell. Employees who joined the system after March 31, 2013 are not eligible.
The gain-sharing payment is a concession from the system’s labor unions, as the employees are receiving this payment in lieu of merit or cost of living raises. This agreement results in immediate savings of $27.2 million for the system, Mr. O’Dell says.
