Ms. Mendoza-Sanchez said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., called her Tuesday evening with the news and expressed her condolences, according to the report.
Ms. Mendoza-Sanchez and her husband have lived in the U.S. for more than two decades, but do not have legal status. The couple will be deported from the U.S. Wednesday on a flight they pushed back one day in hopes of winning a reprieve from U.S. Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the report states.
The couple’s 12-year-old son, who maintains U.S. citizenship, will travel with them to Mexico, while their three daughters — aged 16, 21 and 23 — will remain in the U.S.
Hundreds of healthcare workers, union members and supporters gathered Aug. 14 to protest the couple’s deportation at Oakland, Calif.-based Highland Hospital.
