CUC provides degree and certificate programs for mostly non-traditional graduate and undergraduate students, among other offerings, according to the center website. The programs are offered through work with six public universities governed by the regents. The center, where students can pursue a nursing degree and various other degrees, is run through funding from various sources such as the regents, which lease the CUC building, and the South Dakota Legislature.
In discussing the matter, Regent Kevin Schieffer of Sioux Falls cited “decreases in full-time equivalents, credit hours and head count,” according to the report.
“Money lost has gone up. I just see nothing on the horizon that suggests that is going to change,” Mr. Schieffer said in the report. “We can’t keep carrying this.”
He added, “We just have to face reality. We have too many other priorities to spend the money.”
According to the report, the regents have specifically called on Vermillion-based University of South Dakota and Brookings-based South Dakota State University to help come up with a closing plan by the next board meeting in October.
