The forecast, which was performed by the A. Gary Anderson Center for Economic Research at Chapman University, revealed there were 7 million Californians without health insurance last year. The report also determined about 3.4 million people in California signed up for insurance in 2014, including 2.2 million people who are enrolled in Medi-Cal, the state’s Medicaid program.
Therefore, given there has been an increase in the number of insured, the number of jobs in the state’s healthcare services and social assistance sectors is expected to increase by an average of 3.6 percent per year through 2020, according to the forecast. That means close to 500,000 more jobs in those sectors over the 2013-2020 period, according to the forecast.
The forecast also projects pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing jobs in the state will grow an average of 2.1 percent per year over the next six years.
