Pittsburgh-based UPMC has signed a nonbinding letter of intent seeking to acquire Steubenville, Ohio-based Trinity Health System, which would mark the health system’s entrance into Ohio.
Trinity, a three-hospital health system, is currently owned by Chicago-based CommonSpirit Health. In early 2025, Trinity and CommonSpirit leaders began searching for a regional health system that could enhance its services and clinical offerings, according to an Oct. 15 news release.
“The intent is to keep high-quality health care sustainable and locally available not only for today, but for the future generations,” the release said.
UPMC is now negotiating an agreement that would integrate Trinity into its network, according to the release. Leaders from both organizations “hope to complete the affiliation as soon as possible.”
Trinity Health System includes Steubenville-based Trinity Center West, a 200-bed hospital that recently underwent a $75 million renovation and expansion. It also includes Trinity Hospital Twin City, a 25-bed hospital in Dennison, Ohio, and St. Clairsville (Ohio) Neighborhood Hospital, a 10-bed microhospital that opened in August.
