The systems declared their intent to affiliate in March. Officials expect to complete the deal Sept. 1, pending regulatory approval.

The acquisition places UPMC in direct competition with Philadelphia-based University of Pennsylvania Health System, one of the largest systems in southeastern Pennsylvania.

Through the transaction, UPMC will also gain control of the four hospitals PinnacleHealth acquired through a deal with Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems July 3.
