Terre Haute-based Union Hospital and Terre Haute Regional Hospital, part of Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare finalized their merger Dec. 13 following a lengthy process, according to a news release from Union.

The news comes after the Indiana Department of Health approved a certificate of public advantage in early November 2025. Union Health withdrew an earlier COPA application in November 2024 just days before a state ruling on the transaction, and submitted a new application for the 278-bed hospital in February.

The merger also faced opposition from the Federal Trade Commission and Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita over similar concerns like market consolidation, higher costs and reduced competition. However, local opinion was largely favorable, with 63% of speakers backing the merger at a May 2 state-hosted town hall.

As part of the merger, Union Health has committed at least $117 million in investments, expanded services and the recruitment of more than 30 providers.

“I am deeply grateful to the remarkable team at Union Health and the many legislators and community leaders who supported this effort over the years,” Steve Holman, president and CEO of Union Health, said in the release. “Together, we are not just advancing health care; we are shaping a future where every patient feels the power of hope, healing and community.”

Union Health is advancing detailed COPA implementation plans and will provide regular updates on progress, the release said.
