A year ago, the city of Erwin loaned $800,000 to UCMH for operations with a stipulation that a consultation firm must be hired to assess its operations, which ultimately recommended the hospital partner with a larger organization. The UCMH board issued a request for proposals to MSHA and Wellmont Health System, and accepted MSHA’s proposal in November.
The latest vote approved specifics of the deal, which Board Chairman Roland Bailey said would ensure medical services in the county for “at least another 60 years,” according to the report.
The agreement must be approved by the state attorney general’s office. Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.
