UConn Health delays acquisition timeline for 2 hospitals

Farmington, Conn.-based UConn Health is taking additional time for due diligence as it works through the process of acquiring Bristol (Conn.) Hospital and Putnam, Conn.-based Day Kimball Hospital and integrating them into the UConn Health Community Network, according to a health system statement shared with Becker’s.

The health system said it is committed to the plans but will delay filing a certificate-of-need application with the Connecticut Department of Public Health.

“We will instead resubmit notice of filing in the near future once we have concluded due diligence and planning,” UConn Health said. “We and these hospitals have a shared mission of providing exceptional and accessible care to our communities and we are excited about the upcoming partnership.”

The delay follows a CON public notice filed in late June, which started a 90-day window to submit the application that expired this week, CT Insider reported Sept. 25.

“Day Kimball Health remains fully committed to the planned affiliation with UConn Health and joining the UConn Health Community Network,” the hospital said in a statement to the publication.

Bristol Health President and CEO Kurt Barwis told employees the transaction remains on track to close in early 2027, in a Sept. 25 memo shared with Becker’s. He said resetting the state’s timeline requires only posting a new notice of intent in the news media for three days before submitting a CON.

“We are not aware of anything that would suggest the transaction will not proceed,” Mr. Barwis wrote. He said due diligence and planning continue, including weekly meetings with the UConn Health team.

UConn Health signed letters of intent with Bristol Health and Day Kimball Health in April. The network was established in March, when UConn Health acquired Waterbury (Conn.) Hospital from bankrupt Prospect Medical Holdings for $13 million.
