Farmington, Conn.-based UConn Health has signed a letter of intent with Putnam, Conn.-based Day Kimball Hospital and Bristol (Conn.) Health for the two parties to join the health system.
“This is an important step in strengthening partnerships that expand access to care and bring the expertise of an academic medical center closer to the communities we serve,” Andy Agwunobi, MD, CEO of UConn Health, said in a statement shared with Becker’s.
Lou Auletta Jr., chairman of the board, and Kurt Barwis, president and CEO for Bristol Health, said in a joint statement shared with Becker’s that the next step is for the parties to develop a definitive agreement, which will “take some time.”
“We really want to extend our collective appreciation to [Gov. Ned Lamont] and his administration, and the UConn executive team for their support and leadership in working to bring Bristol Hospital and Healthcare Group into the UConn Health System,” the statement said.
The news comes after UConn Health acquired Waterbury (Conn.) Hospital from bankrupt Los Angeles-based Prospect Medical Holdings March 1.
“Through this collaboration, we remain focused on expanding access to care, strengthening local services and improving affordability for our patients, while ensuring high-quality care remains close to home,” Kyle Kramer, CEO of Day Kimball Health, said in an April 29 statement shared with Becker’s. “We look forward to strengthening our work with UConn Health in ways that support our patients, workforce and community.”
