“With the most extensive network of Catholic hospitals and physicians in the region, Providence is well positioned to succeed in this era of accountable care through population health management,” said SCL President and CEO Michael Slubowski in a news release. He also said Providence’s culture was deemed most compatible with staff and physicians.
The two Catholic systems are still negotiating the deal, which will be subject to review from regulators and church officials. No timeline for a definitive agreement or financial details were disclosed.
Other potential buyers who showed interest in buying Saint John’s included San Francisco-based Dignity Health, St. Louis-based Ascension Health and Los Angeles-based billionaire surgeon, drug developer and professor Patrick Soon-Shiong, MD.
