Mayo Clinic Care Network adds Texas health system

San Angelo, Texas-based Shannon Medical Center has joined the Mayo Clinic Care Network, a global group of independent care systems that can tap into the knowledge and medical expertise of Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic.

Membership in the care network will give Shannon access to AskMayoExpert, a clinical database for hundreds of medical conditions; eBoards, a live video conference to discuss complex cases with a team of Mayo specialists; eConsults for second opinions on specific patient cases; and access to Mayo consultants to help hit clinical, operational and business goals.

"In addition to the trusted care of their Shannon physicians, patients will have access to Mayo Clinic expertise and the latest research and treatment recommendations," Shane Plymell, president and CEO of Shannon, said in a Dec. 14 news release. "This means our family, friends and neighbors throughout the region will receive some of the most advanced care in the nation, right here at Shannon."

Formed in 2011, the Mayo Clinic Care Network has more than 45 member organizations across the U.S. and in Asia, India, Mexico and the Middle East.

Recent additions to the network include two Indiana health systems and two hospitals in China.
