Louisville, Ky.-based Baptist Healthcare System is acquiring a surgery center from its cross-town competitor, Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s HealthCare, according to a Courier-Journal report.

Approximately four weeks ago, Baptist agreed to provide a site for University of Louisville physicians to perform tubal ligations. The deal solved a significant problem facing the merger of three Kentucky health systems — Jewish & St. Mary’s, University Hospital and St. Joseph Health System — as they plan to operate under Catholic health directives.

Officials from Baptist and Jewish & St. Mary’s declined to say whether the transfer of ownership was related to the tubal-ligation agreement, according to the report.

Baptist’s acquisition of the surgery center, located in St. Matthews, Ky., is set to take effect Jan. 1. The terms and conditions of the transaction are confidential.
