Kaufman Hall: 5 notable healthcare transactions in 2017

San Francisco-based Dignity Health's proposed merger with Englewood, Colo.-based Catholic Health Initiatives was one of the most notable transactions last year, according to a recent report by Kaufman, Hall & Associates.

In its 2017 year-end report, titled "2017 in Review: The Year M&A Shook the Healthcare Landscape," analysts note 115 transactions were announced in 2017. The statistic represents a roughly 13 percent jump from 2016, which witnessed 102 announced deals.

Kaufman analysts noted Catholic and other nonprofit systems led the charge in creating "megadeals" to secure their place in the healthcare provider landscape. Several large-scale organizations recognized the need to further build scale and enhance their strategic positions in 2017 as competition within the space continues to escalate.

Here are the five most notable healthcare mergers and acquisitions in 2017, along with their potential combined net earnings, according to Kaufman Hall.

1. Dignity Health's proposed merger with CHI — $28.4 billion

2. Charlotte, N.C.-based Carolinas HealthCare System's proposed merger with UNC Health Care in Chapel Hill, N.C. — $13.4 billion

3. Milwaukee-based Advocate Health Care's proposed merger with Aurora Health Care in Downers Grove, Ill. — $11 billion

4. Boston-based Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center's proposed merger with Burlington, Mass.-based Lahey Health, three others — $5 billion
