Houston Public Hospital District Abandons Buying Hospital, Citing Seller’s Demands

The Harris County Hospital District’s board has abandoned its plan to buy Memorial Hermann Healthcare System’s Southwest medical complex in Houston, citing what a board member called the system’s “unreasonable and unacceptable demands,” according to a report by the Houston Chronicle.

The board was reacting to a letter from Memorial Hermann Healthcare System asserting that the hospital district had not “effectively addressed” concerns of the 629-bed hospital’s physicians, whose retention is crucial to the deal.

The hospital district unveiled its plan to buy the hospital six weeks ago as a way to meet the district’s rising demand for services for the indigent.
