MedCath in Charlotte, N.C., placed its 53.4 percent stake in the Heart hospital on sale in June 2011 as it dissolved its company. Originally, five potential buyers, names undisclosed, were in the running to acquire the majority stake.

If Dignity Health, formerly Catholic Healthcare West, secures the deal, the Heart hospital would join a network of over 40 acute care hospitals. Other entities interested in the deal include healthcare-related real estate investment trusts.

Dignity Health is currently connected with Bakersfield Memorial Hospital and two locations in the Mercy Hospitals of Bakersfield network.
