Under the agreement, Sisters of Charity will become the sole “sponsor” of Exempla and its three hospitals: Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge, Colo., Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette, Colo., and Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver, Colo.

Exempla will remain intact but will be governed by a new board of directions, to which the foundation and Sisters of Charity will appoint members. Changes to Exempla’s management structure will be made if the board deems it necessary.

According to the report, the transfer comes after Exempla sued to block it last year because the deal would turn Good Samaritan and Lutheran into Roman Catholic hospitals, ending procedures such as abortion, vasectomies, tubal ligations and removal of feeding tubes, which are prohibited under the doctrine.
