City Officials to Request Public Hearing on South Shore Hospital, Partners HealthCare Merger Plan

City officials in Weymouth, Mass., plan to request a public hearing for the proposed merger between Boston-based Partners HealthCare and South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, according to a Patriot Ledger report.

According to the report, South Shore Hospital applied for a determination of need Jan. 4 from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health for the merger. Any 10 residents of Weymouth can petition the department for a public hearing on the application, which is what Mayor Susan Kay and the 11-member town council may do.

South Shore announced a proposed merger with Partners HealthCare in June. The two organizations have been discussing the deal since April. Under the agreement, the hospital would become part of Partners but would keep its name and remain an independently licensed, non-profit healthcare provider. South Shore would also keep its own board of directors, CEO, medical staff, community connections and fundraising activities.

However, city officials still would like to know whether the merger would result in layoffs or service changes at the hospital, according to the report.
