Newark, Del.-based ChristianaCare and Marlton, N.J.-based Virtua Health mutually agreed to end talks regarding a possible merger, the systems announced Dec. 18.

In July ChristianaCare and Virtua signed a nonbinding letter of intent to form a regional nonprofit system. Together the system would have spanned 10 counties across Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, employed nearly 30,000 people and generated more than $6 billion in annual revenue.

The systems said in a Dec. 18 news release that “after thoughtful evaluation, both organizations have determined that they can best fulfill their missions to serve their communities by continuing to operate independently.”

“Each health system remains committed to providing high-quality, compassionate care and advancing the health and well-being of the patients and communities they serve,” the release said.
