Care New England CEO: Why we chose to partner with Partners HealthCare

Providence, R.I.-based Care New England President and CEO James E. Fanale, MD, discussed his decision to move forward on the proposed merger with Boston-based Partners HealthCare, stating the goal of the deal is to "provide excellent healthcare services … while readying ourselves to respond to what tomorrow brings."

In a Feb. 1 op-ed for the Providence Journal, Dr. Fanale said part of adapting to the changing healthcare landscape is "to be bold and passionate about our work" as healthcare professionals, and that the proposed merger with Partners will "have a tremendously positive impact in Rhode Island," and help improve the system and its ability to provide care to the community.

"It is true, our work has been difficult and challenging for our employees and, in some cases, those of you who have come to trust and rely upon our clinical expertise. This includes closure of the emergency and inpatient services at Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket [R.I.], a difficult but necessary step," Dr. Fanale said, adding, "CNE remains committed to your healthcare needs — including the people of Blackstone Valley — and to ensuring access to unparalleled care for you and your loved ones."

He continued, stating the health system ultimately aims to "preserve healthcare services in Rhode Island, improve access to care and strengthen the academic and research missions of CNE."
