Brooklyn's Long Island College Hospital Now Officially Part of SUNY Downstate

Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y., is now officially part of SUNY Downstate Medical Center, also in Brooklyn, according to a New York Daily News report.

LICH is has been renamed the University Hospital of Brooklyn at Long Island College Hospital. Officials have promised no services would be cut. The previous owners of the financially trouble hospital, Continuum Health Partners, had moved to shut down the hospital's obstetrics, pediatrics and neonatal units before being blocked from doing so by the state.

The state provided $62 million in grants to allow LICH to merge with SUNY, as the state itself wants more teaching space. SUNY will take on LICH's $170 million debt.
