Arizona senators voted yesterday to revoke the Arizona Board of Regents’ control of University Medical Center and University Physicians Hospital, both in Tucson, according to an Arizona Daily Star report.
The hospitals merged last summer into a $1.2 billion nonprofit entity called UA Healthcare. The organization has a 26-member board of directors. The move to change control is in response to votes by the regents last week to alter how it intended to structure UA Healthcare. The regents voted to shrink the size of UA’s board, require the board to hire a new CEO, and report to UA President Robert Shelton.
Sen. Andy Biggs (R-Gilbert) said he considers this an effort by the regents to exercise more control over UA Healthcare, saying the regents want to convert a successful nonprofit operation into a government system.
