450-Bed St. Louis Hospital Closing Most Services Except ED

Forest Park Hospital in St. Louis, with 450 licensed beds, will lay off most employees and slim down to an ED with only a few overnight beds, according to the Post-Dispatch.

The move is part of Forest Park’s merger with 78-bed St. Alexius Hospital, also in St. Louis. Both hospitals belong to Florida-based Success Healthcare.

Forest Park, which has a low census and many creditors, will lay off more than 300 of its 400 employees and close most services, leaving only the ED, a small pharmacy, a lab, a few overnight beds and plenty of healthcare space to lease.

Cuts in the state’s hospital reimbursements, effective last month, would have reduced payments for the two hospitals by $24 million in the next two years.
