Although this merger was just announced publicly, discussions between officials at both hospitals have been ongoing for around a year. According to the report, the new system will be large enough to offer specialties for which there may not have been enough patients at each hospital separately. Primary and secondary care will be offered at each hospital going forward as well.

According to the report, the hospital in Albert Lea has been a part of Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic Health System since 1997 when Albert Lea Clinic and Neave Health Care Association merged to form Albert Lea Medical Center. The hospital was renamed Mayo Clinic Health System in 2011.

Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin was formed following a joint venture between St. Olaf Hospital in Austin and the Austin Clinic. In 1995, the medical entity became known as Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin after affiliating with Mayo Clinic Health.
