The following healthcare mergers, acquisitions, partnerships and general transactions took place or were announced during the week of Jan. 29.

1. Lifespan rejected Brown's partnership proposal to acquire Care New England
Despite stating it was not "party" to Brown University's discussions with Los Angeles-based Prospect Medical Holdings to take over Care New England, Providence, R.I.-based Lifespan was reportedly asked multiple times to participate in discussions, but declined.

2. Covenant Health acquires Texas health system
Covenant Health, a nine-hospital system in Lubbock, Texas, finalized its acquisition of Grace Health System also in Lubbock, Feb. 1.

3. OSF HealthCare completes acquisition of 2 Presence Health hospitals
Peoria, Ill.-based OSF HealthCare finalized its acquisition of two Chicago-based Presence Health facilities in southern Illinois Feb. 1.

4. Montefiore Health System acquires second hospital in 1 month
Newburgh, N.Y.-based St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital finalized plans to join Bronx, N.Y.-based Montefiore Health System Jan. 31. The hospital marks the second institution to join Montefiore within the past month.

5. Cedars-Sinai finalizes affiliation with Torrance Memorial: 3 things to know
Los Angeles-based Cedars-Sinai Medical Center secured its affiliation with Torrance (Calif.) Memorial Health System Feb. 1.

6. Nonprofit OU Medicine assumes ownership of university hospitals: 3 things to know
Nonprofit Oklahoma City-based OU Medicine assumed control of three hospitals affiliated with the University of Oklahoma from Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare.

7. Quorum Health to divest 77-bed Georgia hospital
Brentwood, Tenn.-based Quorum Health, the 35-hospital spinoff of Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems, signed a definitive agreement Feb. 1 to divest one of its hospitals in Georgia.

8. CHS to divest 85-bed Tennessee hospital to Rennova Health
Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems signed a definitive agreement Jan. 31 to sell Tennova Healthcare-Jamestown (Tenn.) to subsidiaries of West Palm Beach, Fla.-based Rennova Health.

9. Wellmont, MSHA receive final approval to merge
The Tennessee Department of Health issued Kingsport, Tenn.-based Wellmont Health System and Johnson City, Tenn.-based Mountain States Health Alliance a certificate of public advantage Jan. 31, the final approval necessary to complete the proposed merger.

10. Florida Hospital withdraws bid to operate Sanford Burnham: 5 things to know
Orlando-based Florida Hospital reportedly pulled its bid Tuesday to acquire La Jolla, Calif.-based Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute's research facility in Orlando.

11. Cleveland Clinic to take over Florida hospital
Leaders of Vero Beach, Fla.-based Indian River Medical Center selected Cleveland Clinic to assume control of the county-owned hospital Tuesday.

12. Ardent close to finalizing operating agreement with Texas health system
Nashville, Tenn.-based Ardent Health Services is one step closer to finalizing an agreement to jointly assume operations at Tyler-based East Texas Medical Center Regional Healthcare System alongside Austin-based the University of Texas System.

13. Physicians' push to purchase Quorum Health hospital in Ohio falls apart
A group of physicians who expressed interest in purchasing Massillon-based Affinity Medical Center from Brentwood, Tenn.-based Quorum Health said they need "millions" to make a valid offer for the hospital.

14. State backs Partners' proposed acquisition of Mass. Eye and Ear
The Massachusetts attorney general's office and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health said they will not oppose Boston-based Partners HealthCare's proposed acquisition of the Boston-based specialty hospital Massachusetts Eye and Ear.

15. HCA acquires 612-bed Georgia hospital: 3 things to know
Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare has acquired Savannah, Ga.-based Memorial Health, which includes a 612-bed academic medical center and primary and specialty care networks.  

16. Texas hospital seeks new management company after UHS backs out of deal
North Texas Medical Center in Gainesville is pursuing negotiations with a new management company following King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services' decision to cancel its management agreement with NTMC May 1.
