Vermont's Fletcher Allen, Central Vermont Medical Center Consider Affiliation

Burlington, Vt.-based Fletcher Allen Health Care and Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, Vt., are considering an affiliation, according to a Fletcher Allen news release.

Trustees at both hospitals approved the move earlier this week.

The affiliation, which the hospitals say is not a merger, would create a common parent organization called Fletcher Allen Partners governed by members of both Fletcher Allen and CVMC. Fletcher Allen president and CEO Melinda Estes, MD, would serve as CEO of the system parent, and CVMC President and CEO Judy Tarr would serve as senior vice president. Both Fletcher Allen and CVMC would retain their identities.

The parent organization would carry out centralized activities such as regional strategic planning, quality and clinical initiatives, joint purchasing, development of a shared electronic health record and tax-exempt bond borrowing, according to the report.

The affiliation will now undergo due diligence and seek regulatory approval.
