Ohio's EMH Amherst Hospital to Convert to Emergency Center, Skilled Nursing Facility

Elyria, Ohio-based EMH Healthcare is planning to convert its EMH Amherst (Ohio) Hospital into a standalone emergency treatment center and skilled nursing facility this summer, according to a Morning Journal report.

The hospital, which will change its name to EMH Amherst Campus, will stop admissions and surgeries starting July 11. The surgical areas will become a skilled nursing facility that EMH Healthcare will lease to an operator and the "Joint Camp" orthopedic surgery program will move to EMH Elyria Medical Center.

The Amherst Campus will retain its outpatient laboratory, medical imaging services, pharmacy, patient registration, maintenance, security and other support services, as well as its long-term acute facility, the Specialty Hospital of Lorain. Renovations are expected to be completed by early 2012.

Approximately 50 full- and part-time employees will lose their jobs, but will receive preference when applying to EMH Elyria Medical Center. Don Sheldon, MD, EMH Healthcare president and CEO, said the new nursing facility could create 80-100 jobs, according to the report.

EMH Healthcare's plans for Amherst Hospital's transition were prompted by the passage of the healthcare reform law, which Dr. Sheldon expects may cause an increase in emergency room visits, and a desire to improve efficiencies to reduce financial losses.
