New York's Upstate University Hospital Submits CON to Acquire Community General

Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y., has submitted a certificate of need to the State Department of Health to begin the formal approval process for acquiring Syracuse, N.Y.-based Community General Hospital, according to an Upstate Medical University news release.

Upstate and CGH would become one hospital with two campuses. The CON describes several benefits of the acquisition: providing Upstate additional space in a cost-effective manner; improving patient access and reducing emergency department diversion; expanding primary care and educational programs; and keeping acute care on Onondaga Hill, where CGH is located.

In addition to New York's Department of Health, the Offices of the State Comptroller and Attorney General will need to approve the acquisition. Hospital officials expect the formal approval process to be completed by July 1.
