Vitals names Patients' Choice award winners

Lyndhurst, N.J.-based Vitals, a healthcare database company, has named the winners of its 8th annual Patients' Choice award.

Here are four things to know about the Vitals Patients' Choice award and its winners.

1. The award, which recognizes top-rated physicians, is based on millions of patient reviews and ratings gathered over the course of the year. According to Vitals, only 5 percent of the nation's physicians are named Patients' Choice winners.

2. Winners have more experience and their patients have shorter wait times. This year's physician winners have an average of two more years of experience than their colleagues. In addition, the winners' patients had an average of a 15 minute and 29 second wait time, whereas the national average wait time is 19 minutes and 16 seconds.

3. Medical schools matter. The majority of winners attended medical schools in the Midwest. Here are 10 U.S. universities from which the majority of winners hailed.

  • University of Illinois at Chicago School of Medicine
  • Indiana University School of Medicine (Indianapolis)
  • Ohio State University College of Medicine (Columbus)
  • Wayne State University School of Medicine (Detroit)
  • Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine
  • New York University School of Medicine (New York City)
  • Drexel University College of Medicine (Philadelphia)
  • University of Texas Houston School of Medicine
  • Louisiana State University School of Medicine (New Orleans)
  • University of Texas Southwestern School of Medicine (Dallas)

Approximately 20 percent of award winners attended foreign medical schools. Here are the 10 countries in which the majority of these award winners attended medical school.

  • India
  • Philippines
  • Pakistan
  • Canada
  • Syria
  • Dominican Republic
  • Egypt
  • Mexico
  • Italy
  • Lebanon

4. The gender gap still exists. About 33 percent of the physicians in Vitals' database are women, and 25 percent of the Patients' Choice awards went to females.
