12 Recent Hospital-Physician Transactions

The following deals between hospitals and physicians — including acquisitions, affiliations, leasing arrangements and joint ventures — occurred or were announced within the last two months, starting with the most recent.

1. Syracuse, N.Y.-based St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center acquired Upstate Surgical Group, P.C., an eight-physician general surgery group with locations in Liverpool and Fayetteville, N.Y.

2. Crystal Lake, Ill.-based Centegra Health System acquired Surgical Associates of Fox Valley, a five-surgeon practice in Crystal Lake, effective Oct. 1.

3. The Cleveland Clinic partnered with The CORE Institute, an orthopedic group based in Phoenix, OrthoCarolina, an independent academic orthopedic practice based in Charlotte, N.C., and the Rothman Institute, a private orthopedic practice based in Philadelphia, to form the National Orthopaedic & Spine Alliance, an orthopedic physician hospital organization.

4. San Jose, Calif.-based Daughters of Charity Health System Medical Foundation, a medical foundation established by DCHS last year, added more than 200 physicians to its fold with the addition of Northern Cal Advantage Medical Group, an independent physician association in San Jose.

5. Chicago-based Northwestern Memorial HealthCare closed its affiliation agreement with Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation, the primary faculty practice for Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

6. St. Louis-based SSM Health Care and Dean Health Systems in Madison, Wis., finalized their merger after receiving all necessary regulatory approvals.

7. Columbus-based OhioHealth acquired Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgical Specialists, a six-physician group in Columbus.

8. St. Peter's Health Partners in Albany, N.Y. announced three independent urologic physician practices are joining St. Peter's Health Partners Medical Associates, a multispecialty group that is a full affiliate corporation of SPHP.

9. Physicians in ELMCARE, a physician hospital organization affiliated with Elmhurst (Ill.) Memorial Hospital, agreed to join Illinois Health Partners, a joint venture between Edward Hospital in Naperville, Ill., and DuPage Medical Group, a multispecialty practice in DuPage County, Ill., effective Jan. 1, 2014.

10. Longmont (Colo.) United Hospital signed a letter of intent to purchase Longmont Clinic. If everything goes as planned, the sale will close sometime around January 2014.

11. Cincinnati-based Mercy Health added 18 physicians to its team by formalizing its partnership with Wellington Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine, which has seven locations throughout the Cincinnati area.

12. The Aultman Health Foundation in Canton, Ohio, acquired the clinical operations of North Canton Medical Foundation, an independent medical practice.
