West Virginia health system lays off 10 employees following IT consolidation

Thomas Health in South Charleston, W. Va., recently consolidated IT systems, resulting in the layoff of 10 employees.

In a statement to Becker's, the system said the layoffs are part of overall improvement efforts as it deals various challenges, such as more patients covered by insurance with low reimbursements, including Medicare, Medicaid and the West Virginia Public Employees Insurance Agency, and a decrease in commercial payers.

"To improve our services, Thomas Heath implemented changes that included going from two IT systems to a single system. Operational changes were anticipated to follow the implementation and included a reduction of approximately 10 employees," the statement reads.

"Thomas Health continues to review all aspects of its operations during this difficult time in healthcare."
