UC Davis Health CFO Tim Maurice's professional advice: 'Don't take yourself so seriously'

In this special Speaker Series, Becker's Healthcare caught up with Tim Maurice, CFO of UC Davis Health System in Sacramento, Calif.

Mr. Maurice will speak on a panel at Becker's Hospital Review 7th Annual CEO + CFO Roundtable titled "Striking the balance between financial and quality incentives" at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13. Learn more about the event and register to attend in Chicago.

Question: What keeps you excited and motivated to come to work each day?

Tim Maurice: I'm constantly motivated by the energy and passion people bring to their work here at UC Davis Health. I learn of new discoveries in medical research, innovative treatments for challenging diseases and compassionate care for our patients. It's a privilege to play a small part in bringing these amazing people together to serve a common purpose.

Q: What initially piqued your interest in healthcare?

TM: I realized when I first learned of the healthcare delivery system that it lacked
fundamental financial management tools to allocate resources, understand costs and
drive innovation in a systematic way. I felt I could really make a difference as a finance
executive in this industry and the results would be better access and improved
quality of care. We have come so far in the last 40 years, but have a long way to go
to really understand our costs and improve value. The work is endless but the rewards
are great.

Q: How can hospital executives and physicians ensure they're aligned around the same strategic goals?

TM: First, they have to realize they can only be successful by working together. Each partner brings valuable skills to the table, but they are likely to be complementary and powerful if you put aside your egos and listen to what each side brings to the strategic initiatives.

Q: What is one piece of professional advice you would give to your younger self?

TM: My advice would be: Don't take yourself so seriously! You can accomplish so much more if you listen, learn and enjoy the moment.
