The growing need for anesthesia leadership and collaboration in the OR

Each member of the surgery team is integral to ensuring every procedure is performed safely at the lowest cost with the best possible outcomes. However, new demands imposed by the shift to value-based care delivery systems necessitate a vast cultural change in many operating rooms.

No longer is it acceptable for each stakeholder to function in silos. Tight coordination of care and ongoing communication between nurses, surgeons, anesthesiologists and administrators is critical throughout the episode of care, especially in the OR. A more collaborative environment can help reduce miscommunications and prevent errors, and improve outcomes for patients and work satisfaction for providers.

But a truly effective team needs strong leadership. Leadership in the OR is an important factor when it comes to recruiting and retaining quality surgeons and nurses, and for promoting a culture of collaboration.

The anesthesia department and medical director can refocus the OR through collaboration, but how can hospitals identify who should take on this responsibility, and how they can implement new collaborative techniques?

Find out during an Aug. 8 webinar sponsored by Surgical Directions.

Lee Hedman, senior vice president of Surgical Directions, and Yvette Stanley, business analyst with Surgical Directions, will lead a discussion on anesthesia leadership and the important role of collaboration.
