STAT: More men named Michael are presenting at JP Morgan's healthcare conference than female CEOs

Twenty-two men named Michael are presenting at the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference this week — more than the 20 female CEOs slated to speak, according to a STAT analysis.

STAT reviewed conference agendas to determine these numbers. Overall, men reflect 94 percent of the 540 professionals presenting at the conference in San Francisco. Men dominate speakers presenting at J.P. Morgan's special sessions too, representing 77 percent of participants.

While J.P. Morgan's two events surrounding the main healthcare conference are more diverse, STAT found 67 percent of speakers at the Biotech Showcase and 75 percent at the Startup Health Festival are male.

J.P. Morgan is not responsible for female representation in the companies presenting at the conference. Companies invited to present can choose who to send, and often select their CEOs to give the 30-minute speech.

One of the female CEO presenters — Julia Owens, PhD, who helms Millendo Therapeutics — told STAT she was "disappointed but not surprised to hear" about the low female representation.
