Contrary to statements he’s made over the past month, Speaker Paul Ryan said Friday Congress will not attempt to tackle entitlement reforms in 2018, according to The Hill.

Though Mr. Ryan previously Republicans would be “hosed” if they did not attempt to reform Medicare and other entitlements this year, he posited a different opinion during a campaign event in Wisconsin Friday.

“I don’t see us tackling it this year,” Mr. Ryan said, according to The Hill.  “You’re going to have to find bipartisan consensus to fix these thorny, long-term problems, and we don’t have that right now.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has said since December he would not attempt to pursue entitlement reform because Democratic lawmakers would never support it.
