With around 90 babies per year born addicted to opioids in Dayton, Oh.-based Miami Valley Hospital, the neonatal care unit has created a program that allows volunteers to cuddle the babies and curb some symptoms of their addiction, according to WDTN.

Neonatal abstinence syndrome is the withdrawal condition that babies born addicted to opioids experience. Symptoms range from trouble sleeping to vomiting. The volunteers cuddle the babies whenever their mothers or nurses are not available to.

“If you talk to any of our staff members that take care of these babies, and even the family members, they will tell you that their babies do better when they are held,” said Amanda Graf, MD, a neonatologist at the hospital.
