Additionally, 157 of the system’s workers will be transferred to other jobs within Mary Washington Healthcare.

Employees affected by the layoffs were mostly in support fields and were offered severance packages depending on length of employment as well as career counseling services, according to the report.

Mary Washington Healthcare will receive roughly $31 million less from Medicare this year and lost about $8.2 million in 2013, according to the report. Tough it renegotiated with vendors and payers, froze hires and cut supply costs, the workforce reduction was still necessary as the system attempts to trim $30 million in expenses.

“We’ve worked very hard to try to make this reduction a one-time event,” a letter to employees stated, according to The Free Lance-Star.
