Layoffs loom after Atrium Health switches anesthesiology providers

Sunrise, Fla.-based Mednax, the parent company of Charlotte, N.C.-based Southeast Anesthesiology Consultants, filed notice that 151 of its employees that worked at several Charlotte-based Atrium Health facilities could be laid off by the end of August, according to The Charlotte Observer.

Atrium did not renew its contract with Southeast Anesthesiology Consultants, and noncompete clauses block the health system's new anesthesiology provider, Scope Anesthesia of North Carolina, from hiring SAC employees, according to the report.

Although most of the 151 employees, including 90 anesthesiologists, will lose their jobs, Mednax will retain a small number of local employees.

"Regrettably, most of our personnel will lose their jobs," SAC's spokesperson told the Charlotte Business Journal. "But we do not know yet precisely what the final figure will be. A small number of anesthesiologists and staff will be retained to service other existing contracts for anesthesia services in the region."
