Former Duke Medical School dean dies at 90

William Anlyan, MD, former dean of Durham, N.C.-based Duke University Medical School, died Jan. 17, according to the Duke Chronicle.

Dr. Anlyan was 90 years old. The cause of death was not specified.

Dr. Anlyan joined Duke University Medical School in 1949 for a general and thoracic surgery residency program. He was appointed to dean in 1949 and held the position until 1989. In 1989, he was the first to be named chancellor of health affairs.

During his time at Duke, Dr. Anlyan brought international acclaim to the medical center by expanding research facilities and overseeing the construction of Duke University Hospital.

“William Anlyan will go down at Duke as one of its true giants, particularly as it relates to its medical center,” said Ralph Snyderman, MD, Dr. Anlyan’s successor in 1989 and a James B. Duke professor of medicine. “Bill devoted most of his life to Duke. He has left a legacy for this institution that will live very, very long into the future.”
