Last year, the company revealed its intent to build part of its headquarters in Long Island City in the Queens borough of New York City, and Crystal City, Va. However, Amazon announced last week it was ending plans to build half of its second headquarters in New York City after criticism from several local and state politicians and public concern.
While Amazon said in its Feb. 14 statement that it does not plan on reopening its HQ2 search, the dismissal has not stopped some cities from encouraging Amazon to reconsider the decision.
“After learning of the decision to pull out of their chosen HQ2 location, I contacted Amazon and city of Newark stakeholders directly, continuing a constant dialogue that predates my time as governor. New Jersey is open for business, and now more than ever, Newark is the clear choice as the next presence for Amazon corporate offices. Amazon now has the opportunity to join in Newark’s story of a city on the rise,” Gov. Phil Murphy said in a statement to NorthJersey.com.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker also sent a letter to Amazon to reconsider bringing HQ2 to Chicago, according to a copy of the letter obtained by the Chicago Tribune.
