Downey (Calif.) Regional Medical Center may emerge from bankruptcy this September due to paying off old debt and improving quality and processes, according to a Downey Patriot report.
The hospital filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Sept. 2009 because of financial losses, lawsuits and a poor payor mix, among other reasons. By adopting total quality management processes and a new business model that emphasizes quality of care and customer service orientation, however, the hospital has made significant improvements, including gaining cash reserves of $3 million.
