Baltimore business leaders hold summit with hospital presidents

The presidents of Johns Hopkins Hospital and the University of Maryland Medical Center — both of which are based in Baltimore — spoke to the Greater Baltimore Committee Wednesday about the uncertain future of healthcare, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Redonda Miller, MD, president of Johns Hopkins Hospital and Mohan Suntha, MD, president of the University of Maryland Medical Center, said the rapid pace of change makes it difficult to keep clinicians in the loop.

"Many of our physicians are wired in a way where they say, 'Tell us the rules of the game, and we will figure out how to win.' And their win definition is saving lives," Dr. Suntha said, according to The Baltimore Sun. "If we are constantly changing the rules or telling them we think the rules are going to change, that can be very challenging."

Drs. Miller and Suntha also emphasized the need for providers to partner with other local organizations to improve population health.

"In reality, the biggest thing we could do to help population health is increase the socioeconomic status of these communities — and that means more than disease management," Dr. Miller said, according to The Baltimore Sun. "That means providing jobs, providing training [and] providing education."
