Roxanna Gapstur, PhD, RN, will retire as president and CEO of WellSpan Health, the York, Pa.-based system said April 6.
WellSpan has launched a national search for her replacement, and she will continue to lead the system until a transition is complete.
Dr. Gapstur has helmed the organization since 2019. A nurse by training, she embraced a human-centered approach to leadership focused on patient experience, employee engagement and a culture of belonging alongside financial and operational performance.
Under her leadership, WellSpan grew from a $2.5 billion to a $4.7 billion system, added four hospitals to reach 12 total, and expanded its footprint from five to 12 counties across Pennsylvania and Northern Maryland. The system’s patient base surpassed 1 million — up from roughly 630,000 — and its medical group grew from 1,500 to more than 2,700 clinicians.
Dr. Gapstur has championed a broader push to reimagine care delivery, advancing its small format hospital model to bring services closer to patients, scaling clinical AI to support more than 3 million patient conversations and launching a genomic medicine program to embed precision medicine into routine care.
