UW Medicine names new CMO, associate CMO: 9 things to know

Seattle-based University of Washington Medicine has named a new CMO and associate CMO.

Here are nine things to know about the appointees.

Carlos Pellegrini, MD, has been named CMO for UW Medicine and vice president for medical affairs for the University of Washington in Seattle.

1. Dr. Pellegrini is the first to hold this new title.

2. In his position, he will offer executive leadership and strategic guidance for the clinical practice and its integration with education and research activities throughout UW Medicine practice sites, as well as oversight for the process of practice transformation, according to a news release.

3. Dr. Pellegrini has served as chairman of the department of surgery at the UW School of Medicine since 1993, and developed the Center for Videoendoscopic Surgery, the Center for Esophageal and Gastric Surgery, and the Institute for Simulation and Interprofessional Studies.

4. Currently, he is a member of the board of commissioners of The Joint Commission. He is also a past chairman of the board of regents and later president of the American College of Surgeons and a past president of the American Surgical Association.

5. He is a world leader in minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery and a pioneer in the development of videoendoscopy for the surgical treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease and esophageal motility disorders, particularly achalasia.

David Flum, MD, has been named associate CMO for UW Medicine.

6. In his new position, Dr. Flum is responsible for initiatives that support UW Medicine.

7. He also leads a $30 million project from the CMS Innovation Center providing infrastructure, programs and training to clinicians and teams to deliver higher value healthcare, according to a news release.

8. Dr. Flum is a professor of surgery, pharmacy and public health at the University of Washington.

9. Previously, he led a statewide initiative, called the Surgical Care and Outcomes Assessment Program, to improve surgical quality at 55 hospitals.
