Louisville, Ky.-based UofL Health appointed Jason Smith, MD, PhD, as CEO, effective Oct. 16.

Dr. Smith had served as interim CEO since June and most recently held the role of system chief medical officer, according to an Oct. 16 UofL Health news release.

He succeeds Tom Miller, the inaugural CEO who stepped down in June after leading the system since 2018.

As CEO, he will lead a regional academic health system comprising nine hospitals, four medical centers and the Brown Cancer Center and Eye Institute. UofL Health operates 250 locations across Kentucky and Southern Indiana and employs more than 1,200 providers.

With Dr. Smith’s appointment, UofL Health becomes the only physician-led health system in the region, according to the release.
