Tom Miller, the inaugural CEO of Louisville, Ky.-based UofL Health, has stepped down, effective immediately, according to a June 25 health system statement shared with Becker’s.

“I have had an individual mission to improve the health of every community I have served,” Mr. Miller told Becker’s on June 25. “I feel I have done this and look forward to retirement after working in healthcare for 50 years.”

Mr. Miller became CEO in 2018 and oversaw the system’s nine hospitals and four medical centers. During his tenure, he led UofL Health through growth to become a $2.7 billion organization and the third-largest employer in Louisville, according to the health system statement.

Before joining UofL Health, Mr. Miller was president and CEO of Brentwood, Tenn.-based Quorum Heath from 2016 to 2018, according to his LinkedIn profile.

He previously told Becker’s in June that UofL Health’s mission has been to never turn away someone in need and to improve community health.

“Divert is a word I hear too often,” Mr. Miller said. “I feel that’s an obligation I have: to never be in that position for our community.”

The UofL Health board plans to appoint an interim CEO in the coming days, the statement said.
